Shape, Center, and Spread of Histograms

Shape:
The resting heart rate histograms is slightly skewed right as demonstrated that the mean is slightly larger than the median.  The active heart rate histogram is slightly skewed left as the mean is slightly smaller than the median.

Center:
The center of the resting heart rate is around 69 beats per minute while the center of the active heart rate is around 91 beats per minute.  We would expect that when our classmates are more active the heart rate increases as our data shows.

Spread:
The interquartile range (IQR) for the resting heart rate is 14 beats per minute while it is 16 beats per minute for the active heart rates.  The active heart rates seem to be a bit more spread out than the resting heart rate.

Outliers:
Once we calculated the upper and lower fence for each data set we noticed that we did not have any data outside of those fences for the resting or active heart rates.  That means that neither data set contains any outliers.

Numerical Summary of Resting and Active Heart Rate

Resting Heart Rate

Minimum: 52
Median:  69
Max:  88
Quartile 1:  62
Quartile 3:  78
Mean:  70

Outlier Calculations
    Inner Quartile Range (IQR):         Q3  - Q1 = 78 - 62 = 16
    Lower Fence:                               Q1 - 1.5(IQR)= 62 - 1.5(16) = 38
    Upper Fence:                               Q3+1.5(IQR)= 78 + 1.5(16) = 102
    No outliers

Active Heart Rate

Minimum: 68
Median:  91
Max:  109
Quartile 1:  83
Quartile 3:  97
Mean: 90

Outlier Calculations:
    Inner Quartile Range (IQR):         Q3-Q1= 97 - 83 = 14
    Lower Fence:                               Q1-1.5(IQR)= 62
    Upper Fence:                               Q3+1.5(IQR)= 118
    No outliers

Here is a link to our Google Docs folder which contains a document and two spreadsheets.  One spreadsheet has the bar graph and pie chart.  The other spreadsheet has the histograms.
